"ukama" means "extended family" or "family unity" in the Shona language and is a very important concept in tribal life. It is a caring philosophy where everyone in the family looks after each other and the "family" includes all the members of the broader group.

The Abstract is the style for which the Shona people are world famous and which is traditionally referred to as "Shona Sculpture".

Carvers will often use either family members or others within the tribe as models for their sculptures.

Shipping

Shipping and handling costs

"Free Shipping" includes packaging, insurance and customs brokerage charges within the USA and Canada. We use Fedex in the USA and Canpar in Canada as our shippers. For very large sculptures (over 65lbs) we use a specialist shipping company and will quote separately for you before finalising any sale. We will only charge your credit card once we ship the item to you.

We will normally ship the sculpture within 3business days. Should you wish to expedite delivery using an overnight courier service, please contact us for the applicable additional charges.

Packaging: For the smaller sculptures, we use a custom foam packaging solution that moulds to the shape of the sculpture and provides complete protection. For larger sculptures, we use made-to-fit, sturdy wooden crates that are designed to handle the extreme weight.

Orders from outside the USA and Canada: We can arrange delivery anywhere in the world. Once we have your address details, we will be happy to provide an exact quote for delivery to your country. You will be responsible for all local fees or duties that mey be applicable in your country.

Our Promise

StoneAge Art Company will deal with you honestly and with absolute integrity.

We offer high quality original shona sculptures at an affordable price and will do our utmost to resolve any issues that arise during our dealings with you.

We treat our shona carvers with the same integrity that we treat you. We have over 250 carvers that supply us with sculptures and we pay them a fair price for their work. Given that each carver could conceivably be supporting up to 10 other members of his broader family, your purchase of their sculptures directly helps over 2500 ordinary people of Zimbabwe survive during very difficult economic times.

Maintaining Your Carving

Caring for your Stone Sculpture

Over a period of time you sculpture could become dull. The cause of this is direct sunlight warming up the stone and absorbing the polish. Do not worry as the following steps will ensure that your sculpture is returned to it’s original beauty.

  1. Heat the sculpture before applying with polish. The heat enables the sculpture to absorb the polish because stone is a natural product and is very porous.
  2. There are two methods of heating, depending on the size of the sculpture. Place small sculptures in direct sunlight until the surface is warm to the touch. In the case of large sculptures use a gas or electrical paint stripping tool.
  3. Apply the heat evenly and be very careful not to concentrate the heat at any one spot for too long as you will damage the stone sculpture. Once the sculpture is warm to the touch apply bees wax or clear wax. Apply the wax continuously until the sculpture is cool and only start polishing the sculpture once it is cold because if the sculpture is hot it will only give a dull finish. Your sculpture will look as good as new again.

There should not be any other maintenance but if it is damaged in any way for example a small scratch, please contact us for detailed instructions on how to restore it to its former beauty.

StoneAge Art Company cannot be held liable for any long-term deterioration of your artwork due to exposure to sunlight, heat or water.

Caring for your Wood Carving

Wood is a natural material and by it’s nature is very susceptible to damage caused by the weather.

You should not store any wood carvings in direct contact with water or in direct sunlight. Although, the carvings require minimal maintenance they will always benefit from the application of a wax polish at regular intervals.

In very dry climates, depending on the age and type of wood, there may be a tendency for the wood to dry-out and small cracks or splits may appear. You may be able to address this by using a humidifier etc.

In view of the above, StoneAge Art Company cannot be held liable for any deterioration of your artwork due to exposure to the weather or changes in the level of humidity.
